Norwalk Alliance Church Awana began February 19, 2003, with 35
children. We currently average 75 children and 30 adults each
Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. during the school year.
This is an effective outreach, as one-third of the children come from
outside the church family.
The three Awana groups are: Cubbies (ages 4-5), Sparks (K-grade 2),
and T&T [Truth and Training] (grades 3-4).
Cubbies stay within their group for songs, crafts,
stories, puppets, memory work, light snacks, and games. Children
should be one or two years from kindergarten to enroll.
Sparks and T&T have opening ceremonies and songs
together, then separate for council time (sharing, prayer, illustrated
lessons, and awards), handbook time (memory work), and game time.
Sparks are divided by grade level for handbook time, and T&T's are
divided into boys' and girls' groups.
Children may purchase vests or shirts after completing the entrance
booklet. They earn patches, badges, crowns, jewels, and stickers for
their uniforms for their memory work and required activities. They
also earn "Awana Bucks" to spend in the "Awana Store" three times a
year.
Awana Grand Prix is an activity in which parents and children build
balsa wood race cars in a contest identical to the Cub Scouts
Pinewood Derby. Twelve trophies are awarded in speed and design for
the different age groups, with T&T winners eligible to go to district
finals.
Because the memory work requires individual help and recitation,
additional helpers including 1/2 hour handbook time are appreciated.
